Produced for Hometta (www.hometta.com), an online custom home plans company, the Dorothy House is a single family of residences, of which there are four versions. Based on the classic suburban ranch house, its design reconciles the economies of the mass produced house with the desire of homeowners to have a custom house uniquely suited to their lifestyle and building site. Each home’s shape and exterior appearance - materials and fenestration - features a planted or solar paneled "side" depending upon orientation or owner preference - floor, roof, or wall; dormers; and picture windows. The unique interior configuration, square footage and character of each version of the house depend upon its orientation:
Rollover Dorothy
2-story, 2-bedroom, 1650 sf stand-alone home well suited for lots of 50’ min. width. 1-car garage, rear porch, dovecote, great room with high skylit ceiling and overlooking mezzanine, master balcony. Grass roof and skylights.
Backflip Dorothy
3-story, 2 or 3-bedroom, 1400 sf stand-alone home well suited for narrower urban or semi-urban lots of 30’ min. width. 1-car garage, ground-floor office/extra bedroom, second-level living level, master balcony. Planted sidewall. 400 sf. photovoltaic facade generates approximately 4 -6,000 kW of electricity per year.
Dorothy on Top
1-story, 3-bedroom, 1300 sf upper floor addition to existing single-story home. Large common space for family room/office with fireplace and creates front or rear porch for existing house below. Grass roof and skylights.
Cartwheel Dorothy
4-story, 3-bedroom, 1730 sf stand-alone home well suited for lots as narrow as 40’. Subterranean garage, full ground-floor living level for optimal access to yard, exterior light and views. Split-level arrangement above maximizes sense of space. Planted sidewall. 500 sf photovoltaic facade generates between 5-7,000 kW of electricity per year.
